1st day – Parma

Arrival in the morning and meeting with the guide.

Visit (external) to the Pilotta palace – from “Pelota”, a Basque game played in the courtyards of the palace, it was conceived as a place of service for the court. We continue with a visit to the Camera di San Paolo frescoed by Correggio and the Abbey Church of San Giovanni Evangelista dating back to the 10th century. with a Baroque facade. Inside the dome, painted by Correggio, with the Transito di San Giovanni (1520-24), completed by the Fathers of the Church and the Evangelists in the spandrels. Visit to the Cathedral, one of the highest expressions of Romanesque architecture in the Po Valley; the interior is full of masterpieces: the dome frescoed by Correggio with the Assumption of the Virgin and the Deposition, the first sculptural work by Benedetto Antelami, and the nearby Baptistery.

In the early afternoon visit to the Teatro Regio.

Afterwards transfer to Soragna and visit to the sumptuous residence of the Meli Lupi princes who still live there today. Superb rooms embellished with early Baroque furniture and furnishings.

The Rocca preserves fresco decorations and pictorial cycles by Nicola dell’Abate, Cesare Baglione, Ferdinando and Francesco Galli Bibiena. Grotesques and frescoes along sumptuous galleries and corridors of mirrors are signed by renowned artists. The Throne Room and the Bridal Chamber are wonderful, as well as the furnishings.

2nd day – Piacenza – Castell’Arquato

Departure for Castell’Arquato located on the first heights of the Val d’Arda, perched along the hill overlooking the valley. No place more than Castell’Arquato can be so evocative as to give the impression of having really been catapulted back in time. The village has remained almost unchanged since the time it was founded and built: walking along the streets, observing the buildings and monuments, one feels the sensation of being out of time. Guided tour of the village, the Collegiata Romanesque church dating back to 1117, the Rocca Viscontea, built between 1342 and 1349, one of the most important military complexes in Northern Italy and the Torrione Farnese a Renaissance tower built on a project in the style of Michelangelo used for military purposes as part of the defensive system of the village.

In the early afternoon transfer to Piacenza meeting with the guide at the Palazzo Farnese. Visit to the carriage museum and the historic city centre: Piazza Cavalli, the Cathedral, the Church of San Savino (with Roman mosaics) and the Basilica of San Francesco.
